Mansfield Park by Jane Austen

I read this book for the first time when I was about 13 or 14 and thought Fanny Price to be such a dull character. I've learned a lot since then about the beauty of the simplicity in this character. I was encouraged to reread it when my friend thought it would be nice to watch the movie. After that I had to read it again and ever since then Ms. Price has been one of my favorite heroines. Here are my thoughts on the book:

Characters: The main character is a girl named Fanny Price. She is sent away to live at a relatives house to become a lady. Which for her, was a great opportunity because her family was very poor. As she grows up in a house of which the family is very wicked, she consistently writes to her younger sister of whom she has not seen since she was very little. I like that this shows consistency and great devotion in her character.

Plot: The plot is a typical Boy Gets Girls theme, well in this case Girl Gets Boy. Fanny falls in love with her cousin, of whom she has grown up with and has shown her the most kindness while living at Mansfield Park. Only to find out that she is being given to a young man of whom she is absolutely sure is bad news while also finding out her true love is falling in love with another. I will stop here so you still have the ending a secret. Otherwise you get the gist of it.

Romance: It is a romance novel...but a good one. Not like the junk you see lining the stores today. I suggest buying a copy of it yourself to see what I mean.

Action: I would say any action in this book is minimal if any at all.

Lessons: My favorite out of all of them is to hold out when you know what you are doing is right.

Overall: Of course I give this book five stars...who wouldn't?

Let me know what you think about Mansfield Park.

This is one book by Austen that I haven't read yet. It's on my "will eventually read list" but I have so many other books to get through before I reach it. :)

    It's a great read.

I'm happy to hear of someone who likes this one because I've read so many negative reviews. I loved it, but then I watched the movie first. I wonder if that makes a difference?

" she consistently writes to her younger sister of whom she has not seen since she was very little..."

In fact, this only happens in Rozema's film version; in the novel, Fanny writes to her brother, William.

    Have you actually read it?

Hmn...you know I had read it, but I must have mixed up the movie with the book. When I read books it's like a movie in my head, so it would be easy to mistake. But I seem to remember that point coming up when I was writing it. I just ignored. Thanks for bringing this to my attention! I'll be sure to fix it :]
